4 Different Sort of Paragraphs

Postby englishteacher551 » Tue Apr 14, 2020 5:46 am

The Descriptive Paragraph: This type of paragraph describes something and shows the reader what a thing or a person is like. The words chosen in the description often appeal to the five senses of touch, smell, sight, sound, and taste. Descriptive paragraphs can be artistic and may not follow grammatical norms as such in poetry.

The Narrative Paragraph: This type of paragraph tells a story (i.e. a narrative - can be long or short). There's a sequence of action or there's a clear beginning, middle, and end in the written piece; often akin to a movie plot with: a beginning, a rising action, a climax, a falling action and a conclusion.

The Expository Paragraph: This type of paragraph explains something or provides instruction. It can also describe a process and take the reader step by step through a specific set of instructions or tasks. This type often requires research, but it's possible that the writer can rely on his or her own knowledge and expertise.
*Note: the difference in comparison to the descriptive paragraph - the descriptive paragraph does not entice the reader to attain a certain, measurable objective.

The Persuasive Paragraph: This type of paragraph encourages the reader to accept a particular point of view, often on a current societal issue. Many teachers focus on assigning this type of paragraph because it's very useful when building an argument, often requires gathering facts, doing research and in effect can be very good preparation for college level composition.

*Note: in formal academic essays, one can write a 10 page composition in each paragraph style if one truly wishes though the reality often manifests as writers using a mix of all methods to make the most convincing argument (which is the ultimate goal).

Can anyone give an example of each? Good luck! :D
