5 ways to learn and use new vocabulary quickly

Postby englishteacher551 » Thu Mar 26, 2020 11:59 pm

1. Learn from context and comprehensible input. Make sure you learn words in their context and never in isolation. Learn from materials that you can already mostly understand, so that you can learn the rest from context.

2. Learn what matters to you such as a strong interest in a particular subject. Perhaps you want to to read about soccer or how to cook like a native chef. The most effective learners are motivated to study because they choose vocabulary based on their interests and needs.

3.Draw connections between new and old knowledge. Learn to associate words with other words (synonyms), sentences and ideas that are relevant to you.

4.Keep a notebook and carry it with you. Make sure to carry a notebook that you can use to write down and study vocabulary whenever possible. This is especially helpful when you want to remember words important to you on the spot.

5.Learn word parts. An example of a word stem in English is -STRUCT- which means “to build.” It’s the root in words like “structure” and “construct.” The stem is also used in a wide variety of other words, including “destruction,” “instructive” and “obstruct.” Each word has a different meaning, but you can see how they all relate to a general sense of “building.”
