Active vs. Passive Reading

Read Actively

Readers can be classified into ‘active readers’ and ‘passive readers’.

Passive readers are not engaged with the content while reading. Passive readers just read words. Passive readers are not looking for anything while reading. They simply don’t have a goal, their mind wanders while reading and they cannot remember what they have just read.

Active Readers, on the other hand, are absorbed by the content while reading. Active readers look for ideas, logic, key elements and main points of the passage. Active readers have a goal to learn or experience something new.

Active readers read mindfully and as a result, they are concentrated and remember more of what they have read.

*They look for a main theme in the passage they read.

*They pay attention to the tone of the author.

*They focus on key transition words such as However, But, While, etc.

*They focus on the organization and structure of the passage.

*They assimilate what they have read after every sentence.

*They summarize in their own words, in their mind, after reading certain content.
